Week 08: Anatomy Refresher

15 minutes, chalk on coloured paper

The proportions are fairly successful, he is around 7 heads tall in this drawing which reflects general proportions in reality, and there is some attempt at underlying muscle structure such as on the pectoral muscles however, the closest one of these muscles looks quite high and has possibly been placed incorrectly.
Some areas have been overworked such as the far knee/ calf and the shoulder which takes your eye away from the more successful areas of the image to the unsuccessful. Some areas would not need to be blended as I have done as leaving are purely white or black would have made shadows and stronger which would have looked more appealing. This blending has created mid-tones which is largely the purpose of using the coloured paper.
Instead of shading straight vertically or horizontally, there is diagonal shading which harmonizes with elements of the drawing by slowing the eye down as it means all the lines are not pointing in one direction. The drawing could be improved further by adding similar shading on the background to juxtapose the colours of the body. By adding a white background to the right side which is dark and a dark background on the left where it is lighter, it would have contrasted and balanced the drawing, again making it more appealing and shadows/highlights more intense.
The weighting of the closest leg looks incorrect because it appears that he is standing on his tip toe when it should be firmly planted on the ground as the hips are not slanted to show the weight would be on the opposite leg.

20 minutes, chalk on coloured paper

The proportions in this drawing look less successful that the previous one as both sections of the arms look too long, they also are 'sausage limbs' as they do not show muscle definition. However, the closest leg is more successful in showing muscle definition looks more defined as the curves have been exaggerated. The feet and hands have also suffered this lack of observation and have become unnaturally blobby.
The weights in this is easier to see as it is clear his head is resting on his hand which is leaning on this other hand/knee and the other leg is more rested.
Similar shading has been attempted  as that in the previous drawing however here it is less successful as there is a lot of the same directional shading, which could possibly be improved by shading in the opposite direction.
Again some areas have been over worked such as the hand which has become messy and very unlike a hand.
Other areas that have not been observed very well is the ellipsis of the table as the two ends do not match, the left being of a close ellipsis and the right would be further away due to the angles of the curves.

Week 07 - Detail In Still Life

Graphite, 40 minutes.

The drawing shows two point perspective quite successfully and the overall form looks fairly accurate. This success of this is helped by the shadows on the objects, especially those on the pompoms on the hat, make the drawing look more realistic and 3D and which also make it clear that the light is coming from the right side.
The use of mark-making on the objects has been used in different ways to try and reflect the true marerial and therefore also more realistic. For example, even though there is a number of scarves in the images, it is clear that the far one is made of a lighter fuzzier wool than the alternate one which is consists of chunkier stitches. This then contrasts against the drapery which has no patterns and is made of a one slightly thicker materia.
This mark-making has been achieved through impressionistic techniques to suggest the detail instead of drawing each stitch because when working quickly it is unrealistic to attempt to draw in that level of detail.

Week 06 - Excusion to Bradford Industrial Museum, Detail In Man-Made Forms

 45 minutes,  graphic markers.

The material is reflected with reasonable success as it is quite easy to see that it is a reflective surface however, the highlights have been blended far too much using white chalk and therefore do not stand out like they should to make it look really shiny.
There is no detail on the wheels to differentiate between the shiny surface of the car or the material of the tyre. These things would suggest that the detail has not been as highly observed as it shoud have been to fulfil the purpose of the task this week.
The perspective is quite accurate, though it is not a particularly interesting one, until you reach the wheels which look odd as they are leaning out at the bottom (some of back wheel was out of view) again suggesting the object needed to be observed more closely.
The drawing also needs some shading in the environment as the object is floating, not as it would be in real life.
